Disney World's Typhoon Lagoon

Typhoon Lagoon at Walt Disney World

This summer, you can cool off at Disney World's Typhoon Lagoon. This water park which first opened in 1989 is still attracting a lot of visitors with its centerpiece, the 100 foot Mount Mayday where the park's 2 speed slides, 4 twisting body slides and three tube slides are all located. You also won't have a hard time finding it because you will notice Ms. Tilly, a shrimp boat situated on top of the mountain.

Beneath the 100 foot man made mountain, the theme park spreads out to a 2 ½ acre lagoon that is surrounded by white beaches. If the weather gets to you, there is plenty of shade around thanks to the lush vegetation.

Some of the other attractions at the theme park are Ketchakiddie Creek, Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool, Castaway Creek, Humunga Kowabunga, Storm Slides, Gang Plank Falls, Mayday Falls, Keelhaul Falls and Shark Reef.

In case you need anything, you can head down to Singapore Sal's Beachwear, Gifts & Sundries. If you have to store some stuff, you can rent a locker for $5 while $7 for a larger one. There is a refundable fee of $2 when you turn in the key.

Guests can borrow towel for $1 each. For those that need life vests, you can get this for free since you are not allowed to bring other floatation devices into the park.

When you feel hungry, you can get some snacks at Leaning Palms, Typhoon Tilly's, Lowtide Lou's Snacks and Let's Go Slurpin.

If you need to some medical attention, you can go to the First Aid Station that is located near the Leaning Palms Snack Bar.

There are certain regulations that people should follow when inside the park.

1. Swimwear that has exposed metal is not allowed to be worn inside the park.

2. Children under the age of 10 should always be accompanied by an adult.

3. Although the park is open from 10am to 5pm, this may change depending on the weather conditions.

4. If you have made reservations beforehand and the park is suddenly closed, you will not be given a refund.

5. Even if you buy a ticket to enter this water park, you cannot use this to enter any of Disney's other water parks.

The park is closed for one month every year for repairs and maintenance. Adults have to pay $35 plus tax while children below the age of 10 to 4 will have to pay $29 plus tax. Anyone under three is free.

Disney Dining Plans - Are They Affordable and Do They Save Money?

Will Using a Disney Dining Plan Save You Money?

That's a good question. Disney says that if you use one of they plans you'll get a 20% - 40% discount off your restaurant bills. That sounds like a really good deal, but is it?

In January of 2009, Disney added the Quick Service Plan to the other dining plans to give guests a complete range of discount packages to choose from. There are 3 basic "dining" plans to choose from. They range from the Quick Service to the Deluxe Package. Here's a synopsis of each. (All meals are per night of your stay)

  • Quick Service - 2 meals (at Quick Service locations) and one snack. Includes a refillable mug. 2009 price $31.99 for adults, and 9.99 for children (ages 3-9) per night of your stay.
  • Dining Plan - 1 Quick Service meal, 1 Table Service meal (at all participating restaurants) and 1 snack, Includes a refillable mug. 2009 price $39.99 for adults, and $10.99 for children (ages3-9) per night of your stay.
  • Deluxe Dining Plan - 3 meals and 2 snacks per person. Includes a refillable mug. 2009 price is $71.99 for adults and $20.99 for children (age 3-9)

Disney has some other plans but they include recreation activities.

The fine print - all guests listed in your party must be on the plan. The plan must be booked for the entire length of your booking. Gratuities are not included.

Back to our question, will the plans save you money?

If you use them to their fullest, yes they will. But using them to the fullest is not an easy task. Let's look at an example day from each plan.

The Quick Service plan -

  • Breakfast - $6.99 for a Ham and Cheese Omelet (most expensive thing on the menu) at the Everything Pop at Disney's Pop Century - Refillable mug used for drink.
  • Lunch - $8.48 for a combo hot dog meal and soft drink at Casey's Corner in the Magic Kingdom.
  • Snacks - 4.94 for a Mickey ice cream bar and a soft drink.

Day total $20.41. If you are staying 5 days the prorated portion of the refillable mug would be $3.00. That brings the total to $23.41. That's a long way from $31.99.

You have to work pretty hard to make the Quick Service plan a good deal.

The Dining Plan -

  • Breakfast - $6.99 - I'm a creature of habit. (Same as above.)
  • Dinner - $30.99 - Adult price at 'Ohana.
  • Snack - $2.59 for a Mickey ice cream bar

Total $39.57. Again the prorated cost of the refillable mug is $3.00.

This one almost makes sense. You can save money using a Disney Dining Plan by choosing Disney World restaurants where the meals cost more than average.

The Deluxe Dining Plan -

  • Breakfast - $16.98 - Steak and eggs and juice at Kona Cafe.
  • Lunch - $31.75 - Tacos de Pato, Tacos Al Pastor, Flan de Vanilla at San Angel Inn in Epcot.
  • Dinner - $41.95 Shrimp Cocktail, Nihonbashi, Chocolate Ginger Cake at Teppan Edo in Epcot.

Total $90.68 - Now that's a good deal.

Yeah, a real good deal if you want to weigh 700 pounds when you get through with your trip. Three full-service meals a day is a lot of food. It's also takes a lot of time. Each sit down meal takes about an hour and a half. That would be over 4 hours a day eating meals not to mention about a billion calories.

The Disney Dining Plans are designed so you can prepay your meals and to make you think you're saving money. They are not designed to help you save money. Disney is in business to make money. They are pretty good at it.

The Disney Dining Plans can be affordable if you are careful to choose higher priced restaurants for your meals. But for the most part these plans only make sense for Disney.

The best thing about the Disney Dining Plans is once or twice a year Walt Disney World offers them for free.

Why Stay in Hotels Near Disney World?

Staying in a Disney Resort

Walt Disney World Resort hosts a number of Disney hotels on property, and there are many others nearby. These Disney hotels often times provide shuttle transportation to Disney parks, diverse amenities, themed areas and plenty of recreation. With so much to do, the hotels are almost like mini attractions. And, most importantly, you'll be near Disney World, the place where all of the magic happens.

Here are some perks to staying in Disney-area hotels.

Many of the hotels near Disney are themed. From movies, music and sports to animals, wilderness and the islands, there is a themed resort to suit any enthusiastic visitor.

Amenities will make you feel at home and will keep you occupied. Hotels offer diverse rooms that cater to parties of all sizes. From smaller rooms to larger suites, you'll find a room perfect for you. Many of these hotels offer broadband Internet, swimming pools, gyms, offices and shuttle transportation services to nearby Disney World attractions.

With so many themed Disney World hotels, you'll find your favorite recreational activities and amenities nearby-often, just outside your hotel door. Make a splash on a waterslide, engage in a tennis match, take a ride on a canoe or kayak, cook dinner in your room, eat breakfast with Disney characters or buy Disney souvenirs. Whatever you choose to do, you'll stay busy.

Being near Disney World can sometimes mean staying in hotels on Disney property. These hotels offer shuttles to the Disney parks, Disney-themed gift shops, character breakfasts and sometimes even discounted attraction tickets. Each time you stroll around the hotel property, you'll be reminded that you are in Disney World. And this will add to your Disney experience.

Even if you don't stay on Walt Disney property, nearby hotels offer the advantage of location. You'll be just minutes away from your favorite theme parks. If you are only planning on spending a day or two at a theme park but want the extra time to spend on smaller attractions, you may want to stay in the Kissimmee area or on International Drive. Just a short ride away from Disney World, these hotels are near bustling areas that are home to restaurants, shopping, Disney Dining, attractions and nightlife. And many of the smaller attractions, such as Fun Spot, offer free parking and admission. So, though you're still just a short ride to Disney, you'll save big by being able to spend time exploring the smaller attractions just outside of Disney.

Though the hotels just outside of Disney property may not be as extravagant and may lack themed rooms that you'll find at Disney World hotels, there are plenty of benefits to staying near Disney. These hotels are often cheaper and they still offer complimentary shuttle service to area theme parks. Many of them have gift shops that still allow you to purchase Disney souvenirs too. And the best part is that you will be exposed to more diverse attractions than you would by staying on Disney property.

At hotels near Disney World, you'll find everything from airboat rides, indoor skydiving and alligator wrestling, to themed dinner shows, wacky museums and delightful cuisine. Depending on where your hotel is, you may even be able to travel to these places on foot. So, Disney is a short drive away, but you're still given the option of diverse offerings just outside your door.

Wherever you choose to stay, if you plan on spending any time at all at Disney, a hotel near Disney or on Disney property is probably your best option.

Booking Disney Dining Isn't Always Easy

More About the Disney Dining Plan

Think that booking Disney dining is an easy task? You are sadly mistaken depending on what you're looking for and the time frame in which you book. Most guests think that all there is to booking is either a click of a button with their mouse or a touch of a few buttons on the phone dial pad. Well, there's a lot more to it than that. There's planning your reservations, working your dining schedule into your vacation and actually trying to get the time, place and date of the reservation you want. It may not be an easy task, but there are some things you can do when booking to make the process go smoother.

It takes a lot of planning when it comes to booking Disney dining locations. You have to remember that there are thousands of other guests who want the same reservations that you want in your time frame. Those other guests may be a lot savvier and are also planning to the "t". They are documenting the times they are planning to dine, how long they plan to dine and most importantly, where they want to dine. Some of the popular dining locations can be extremely hard to get into depending on the time of the year. Character dining, signature dining and dinner shows are among the most popular so you'll want to be sure to book 180 days out. When you plan your dining times along with where you want to dine can mean the difference of you getting a reservation or being on the outside looking in. Early reservations tend to be the first ones to go as supposed to the later ones. If possible, try booking a bit later. This goes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Many openings are available for later times and if you can't get that early reservation you want, it may be your best bet.

Location is important when it comes to booking Disney dining restaurants. Guest tend to stress a bit when it comes to this point, but there's really no need to get twisted about it. First, just make sure that you find a restaurant that will benefit the entire family. If you're not sure, you can either jump on the Disney website and look for information or simply Google the restaurant and tons of information will come up. You may also want to have some backup restaurants in mind. Depending on where you're looking to dine, it could be a possibility that the dining location you want may be booked. Keeping your options open will you save you a lot of time and frustration.

Florida Water Parks Are Some of the Best

Enjoy the Florida Water Parks

AdventureIsland - Tampa

AdventureIsland at Tampa is close by to BuschGardens and is packed with excitement and adventure. It offers around 34 30 acres of water rides and other attractions. There are picnic and sunbathing areas, along with outdoor cafes, snack bars and gift shops.

For people who love thrills, the Wahoo Run plunges up to five riders at a time, more than 15 feet per second as this half-enclosed tunnel twists and turns more than 600 feet to a waiting splash pool below. Wahoo Run has been called the "fastest tunnel river raft in the world," Here, you will corkscrew through spins and spirals propelled by more than 10,000 gallons of water.

The Tampa Typhoon will also have you screaming as you "free-fall" seven stories down a 76 foot water slide on one of the most heart-pumping rides in the park.

Other thrill rides include the Splash Attack, Caribbean Corkscrew, Runaway Rapids, Aruba Tuba and the Gulf Scream, a huge 210-foot body slide that whisks you into the waiting pool below at 25 mph.

Also try Paradise Lagoon. This is a 9,000 square foot attraction, which features several individual attractions. These include a rope walk, a cable drop, several slides and a 20-foot platform jump for cliff jumping.

The Endless Surf is AdventureIsland's 17,000-square foot wave pool that generates waves up to five feet high for hours of total fun at the coolest and wettest place in Tampa.

For those who prefer a more relaxing and quieter ride, there is Rambling Bayou where you can drift around Paradise lagoon in a car tyre inner tube (beware of the sun though as the water seems cool but the sun is very hot).

Adventure Landing: ShipwreckIsland Waterpark - Jacksonville Beach

Adventure Landing and ShipwreckIslandWaterPark is a combination water park and amusement park located between Jacksonville Beach and the Intercoastal Waterway.

It is the largest amusement complex in northeast Florida, and offers family fun for all ages. ShipwreckIsland, is the interactive waterpark, and includes a variety of water attractions such as a wave pool, slides, inner tubing and a very unique uphill waterslide. The ShipwreckIslandPlayVillage is the main centrepiece for children, and includes multiple attractions for young guests of all ages.

Adventure Landing/Shipwreck Island Water Park has three "extreme" slides. The newest ride is the Hydro Half Pipe, where single, double and triple-tube riders experience a sudden, nearly vertical, drop of 40 feet, and are then propelled through a pool of water to another ramp on the other side.

The Rage is an "uphill/downhill" water slide and The Eye of the Storm is a once in a lifetime ride, that is only for the most risky thrill seekers. You must be a strong swimmer and at least 48" tall to take on The Eye of the Storm.

The park also features a half-million gallon wave pool.

The ShipwreckIslandPlayVillage, designed with children in mind, contains waterfalls, multiple small slides and water cannons that will keep children entertained for hours.

Be prepared to enjoy non-stop action on Adventure Landing's dry side.

Start your adventure with the Adventure Speedway Go-Karts, where a twisting quarter mile go-kart track with live racing has results posted on a finish-line leader board. The park advertises that "it is as close to NASCAR racing as you get."

For those looking for something a little calmer, Adventure Golf has two unique 18-hole miniature golf courses designed for fun and relaxation in mind. The two courses challenge all skill levels as they wind through tunnels, over waterfalls and "mountains."

The multi-level Arcade has over 100 interactive games, and kids especially love Laser Tag, an indoor battle arena with "out of this world" lighting and sound.

For a thrill of a lifetime, the MaxFlight Coast Simulator takes guests on an adventure into the world of virtual reality. This ride has a 360-degree range of motion that allows you to physically feel what can only be imagined in the "real" world. You must be in good health to ride the MaxFlight Simulator, not pregnant and it is not recommended if you suffer from claustrophobia.

The Wacky Worm Roller Coaster is for people of all ages, and the Frog Hopper is an adventure ride for younger children.

Adventure Landing also offers Batting Cages, for hardball, softball, slow or fast pitch. It's great for individual or team practice.

If you feel hungry after all that fun, there a two themed snack bars that have all kinds of food, snacks and drinks.

Adventure Landing's Shipwreck Island Waterpark is located at 1944 Beach Boulevard, Jacksonville Beach.

Aquatica is Florida's newest water park which opened in April 2008.

This park offers a new twist in water play with animal interactions, as in the Dolphin Plunge which is the most popular ride in the park. Two side-by-side enclosed tube slides send you racing through an underwater world that is home to a playful pod of beautiful black-and-white Commerson's Dolphins.

Try the Taumata Racer if you are looking for the biggest thrill in the park. This is a high speed competitive mat ride where eight racers rip down a staggeringly steep hill, head first.

Loggerhead Lane - take a load off your feet and hop on a lazy river ride down Loggerhead Lane. This leisurely raft ride takes you through an underwater world colored by exotic tropical fish.

Tassie's Twisters is one of the wackiest rides ever imagined. In fact, getting there is part of the fun. From the Loggerhead Lane lazy river, you'll make your way to the island in the center and climb to the tower. Once you get to the top, lightning fast tubes shoot you into a giant bowl, where you'll spin, and spin, and spin, until you're finally spun back out into the lazy river. You've never seen or felt anything quite like it.

Whanau Way is a quadruple slide tower and is one of the most popular rides in the park.

Walhalla Wave & HooRoo is a is a thrilling ride for the whole family, zooming you through a 6-story maze of twists, turns, and tunnels before you surge back out into daylight.

Walkabout Waters is one of the most talked about places in the park for children. This towering, 60-foot-tall rain fortress is bursting with color, excitement, and adventures waiting to begin.

Cutback Cove & Big Surf Shores - one thing or should we say two things that makes Aquatica so unique are the giant, side-by-side wave pools you won't find anywhere else in the U.S. At Cutback Cove, the waves are always rolling, and the action's always high. At BigSurfShores, the surf can be high or slow and easy. What kind of wave do you feel like catching today? Two separate pools let you decide.

Roa's Rapids race you along an action river ride through the white waters of Aquatica. Get ready for an awesome adventure through a roaring sea of high tides, swirling whirlies, and gushing geysers- all at speeds that leave ordinary river rides eating this one's wake.

Aquatica is located across the street from SeaWorld Orlando on International Drive and is open year round.

BlizzardBeach is one of Walt Disney World Resort water parks and has a Winter theme.

For a really "cool" time, this 66-acre water adventure park has all the atmosphere of a major ski resort - but it is strictly tropical.

Here, visitors can slip and slid down "snow-capped" mountains amid a snowy scene (a visual effect only - temperatures actually remain a controlled tropical level year-round,). Waterslides look a lot like slush cascading down the mountainside, and a "ski lift" takes guests to the top of Mt.Gushmore. Disney's BlizzardBeach. It contains 21 slides, a wave pool, and a separate area for pre-teens and children.

As you enter the park, the first thing you see is the 90-foot snow-capped mountain, Mt.Gushmore. It is home to the newest waterslide called Downhill Double Dipper, a side-by-side racing water slide that stands 50 feet high and 200 feet long. Riders travel up to 25 mph as they twist and turn before shooting out through a blast of water.

Other adventures at Mt.Gushmore include slalom courses, toboggan and water sleds and the 120-foot high Summit Plummet, a breathtaking 60-mph plunge straight down to a splash landing at the base of the mountain.

The Teamboat Springs is the world's longest family white water raft that ride takes six-passenger rafts down a twisting 1,200 foot series of rushing water falls.

The Toboggan Racer is an 8-lane water slide that sends guests racing over exhilarating dips as they descend the "snowy" slope.

Snow Stormers has three flumes descending from the top of the mountain and following a switchback course through ski-type slalom gates.

Runoff Rapids is an inner tube run, where riders can careen down three different twisting, turning flumes.

Chair Lift is where wooden bench chair lifts carry guests over the craggy face of Mt.Gushmore, from its base at the beach, to its summit.

At Cross Country Creek, you can float on a tube along a lazy river that encircles the entire park. On the way, you will float through a cave where you'll be splashed with "melting ice" from overhead. "Melt-AwayBay" is a 4,000 square foot (one-acre) wave pool that is nestled against the base of Mt.Gushmore and is constantly fed by "melting snow" waterfalls.

Tike's Peak is a smaller version of Mt.Gushmore, just for children. It includes short water slides, a snow-castle, fountain play area and a squirting ice pond.

The Ski Patrol Training Camp is designed for pre-teens; equipped with inner tube slides and a challenging ice-flow walk along floating icebergs.

Typhoon Lagoon is Walt Disney World's 56-acre water park that includes a man-made watershed mountain and eight twisting, turning water slides and roaring streams. It is also home to a two-and-a-half-acre wave pool, one of the worlds largest (where the waves are as big as six feet and come at you every one and a half minutes)

The park features a water playground for children, a white sand beach and a lazy stream that surrounds the 95-foot MountMay Day.

MountMayday, is the 95-foot volcano on top of which is perched a shipwrecked shrimp boat. At the summit of MountMay Day, guests can choose from several exciting water slides. At the base of the mountain is one of the world's largest wave pools, complete with a white sandy beach and some of the most powerful artificial waves in Orlando. Also bordering the Lagoon is Castaway Creek, a 2,100-foot river that carries guests leisurely around the perimeter of the park. You can even go snorkelling amid tropical fish and other exotic marine life.

Typhoon Lagoon is the main wave pool that is two-and-a-half- acres, and holds 2.75 million gallons of water. There are two sets of waves that are produced in this pool. The first set are gentle bobbing waves that come on a continuous basis, like a normal wave pool. However, every half hour a loud horn will sound and that means that the waves will be changing. At this point, get ready for waves as large as four feet that come at you with a lot of speed and force, every 90 seconds.

Castaway Creek is the lazy river that travels around the park. Take an inner tube and float along. The river is only 3-4 feet deep and runs on a slow current. As you float down the river on this 2,000-foot journey, you will see banana trees, palm trees, tropical birds and flowers. You will slowly drift through caves, under waterfalls and cool mists, and through tropical forests, and around all the other attractions at the park. If you choose, you can get off Castaway Creek at one of the many stops along the way.

Disney's first ever water coaster, the Crush n' Gusher is a thrilling experience that defies gravity as powerful jets propel passengers on rafts through every surprise filled turn until they splash land in the pool below.

Three water slides await you at Humunga Kowabunga, which sends you zooming through enclosed tubes at 30 mph to a splashing surprise ending.

Storm Slides is another set of three slides where you will twist and swirl through caves and tunnels.

MaydayFalls is the longest waterslide in the Park that takes guests aboard their own personal inner tube down the side of the mountain in the shadow of the famed shrimp boat.

One of the most dramatic attractions at Typhoon Lagoon is Shark Reef, a massive saltwater pool and manmade coral reef, where you can snorkel among swarms of exotic marine life. For those who don't want to get wet, there is a sunken tanker with portholes that provide stunning views of the underwater activity.

Ketchakiddie Creek is Typhoon Lagoon's play area, especially for children aged two to five. There is a small pool and water slide, fountain and bubblers, interactive water boats, and even a pint-sized white water rafting adventure. An adult must accompany all children.

Wet-n-Wild in Orlando, was voted by the Amusement Business Magazine as America's "number one water park," and also honoured by Aquatic's International as the country's "first true water park."

Wet 'n Wild is, indeed, the oldest water park in the area, but it is continually adding new rides and is loaded with slides and other attractions for the entire family. It includes a 7-story water slide, various tubes, wave pools, and a LazyRiver tube ride around the park and more, including a rather elaborate children's area.

Over a dozen thrill rides in all at Wet 'N Wild (including several multi-person/family rides) will keep even the most discriminating amusement park aficionado entertained. Wet 'N Wild is also fully staffed with certified lifeguards and all the pools are seasonally heated.

One of the newest attractions at Wet 'N Wild is Disco H2O, a multi-million dollar retro slide that showcases the 1970s disco nightlife. Like other bowl rides, this one sends passengers on a four-person cloverleaf "raft" down a slide and into a large funnel where it swishes and spins to the sounds of the hits of the 70s, before splashing out the bottom. Inside the ride are flashing lights and a mirror "disco" ball.

Other rides include the Bubba Tub, a four-person raft that takes passengers on a rollicking ride on a triple dip slide.

The Surge sends five passengers at a time through a never-ending maze of twists and turns, and The Blast sends groups of two through a colourful maze with sound effects and then ends with a final plummet into the water.

Experience the thrill of The Bomb Bay, where the floor actually falls out from underneath you in a bomb-like capsule, 76-foot high vertical slide. (Get ready to feel your stomach drop to your feet in this one!).

Thrill seekers will want to try out The Flyer, which begins its' descent from a vantage point located 40 feet above the park. This exhilarating ride sends passengers racing through 450 feet of banked curves and speedy straightways.

Another of the park's most popular rides is the Blue Niagara, where you'll race, twist and splash through 300 feet of intertwined looping tubes that start at six stores above the park and end with a big splash landing.

Wet N Wild also features a winding LazyRiver where you can enjoy a relaxing ride as you drift slowly through bubbles to an enchanting spring with a waterfall spilling over a rocky hillside.

Wet 'n Wild's newly upgraded 17,000 square foot Surf Lagoon Wave Pool features some of the most powerful waves found at any water park.

Just for children, Kid's Park at Wet N Wild, is complete with a giant sandcastle, kiddie pool and specially sized beach chairs. The Bubble Up is a large, multi-collared balloon that is crowned with a mushroom-shaped fountain that sprays water all over the balloon's surface. Kids can climb to the top (with the aid of a rope) and then bounce down the side of the balloon into a three-foot deep pool below.

ShipwreckIslandWaterPark - Panama City

ShipwreckIslandWaterPark is the only water park located within 300 miles of Panama CityBeach.

Six acres in size, ShipwreckIsland is designed for family entertainment and offers rides, slides, a lazy river and a large wave pool, set amid lush tropical landscaping.

Rides at ShipwreckIsland include thrill rides, family rides and a special "Tadpole Hole" section just for children.

The Raging Rapids, Tree Top Drop and the huge double slide Pirates Plunge are just a few of the exciting thrill rides at the park.

The White Knuckle River Ride, ShipwreckIsland's newest ride, takes guests in large, three-to-five passenger inner tubes swishing and swirling down a 660-foot long, six-story high flume in an exciting, white knuckle experience.

The Ocean Motion Wave Pool at ShipwreckIsland has been said to be "the closest thing to the beach without actually being on the beach." It contains 500,000 gallons of water and is the coolest thing around on a hot summer day.

Visitors who prefer to take things slow can enjoy floating gently downstream in inner tubes on the LazyRiver.

Kids enjoy the Great Shipwreck and the Zoom Flume and even toddlers can get in on the action with the rides at Tadpole Hole, including the Frog and Pelican Slides.

Walt Disney World's EPCOT

Tips for Visiting Epcot

Since its opening in 1982, Epcot at Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida continues to be rated as one of the most popular theme parks in the world. Million of visitors come from all over the globe to visit this top-notch theme park. Epcot's blend of education and entertainment make it an enjoyable experience for guests of all ages.

Visitors to other Disney theme parks, like the Magic Kingdom and Disneyland may be used to the crowded areas and slow moving lines that cause a great deal of stress to their guests. The design and layout of Epcot is more conducive to park touring, allowing guests to roam more freely without feeling crowded or packed in at any park area.

When planning your visit to Epcot try to allow two full days to touring the park. Epcot is nearly 300 acres and has two sections, Future World and World Showcase. Future World usually opens at 9am but closes around 7pm, two hours before Epcot's closing time. World Showcase opens at 11am and stays open until 9pm. The popular Illuminations show begins each night at 9pm and is considered the "finale" before the parks closing.

If you are able to visit Epcot for more than one day you will be able to visit at a more leisurely pace. It is suggested that you visit the attractions at Future World as the park opens, and then make your way into World Showcase. Your first day at Epcot will be spent mostly in Future World, with such popular attractions as Soarin, Mission Space and Test Track. Most major attractions at Epcot can be found in the different pavilions, The Land, Living Seas, Universe of Energy, etc. You should allow about one hour when visiting each pavilion as the attractions include pre-shows and most times a wait on line. Disney's FastPass feature allows you to secure a return time (with a one hour window) so that you may return to the popular attraction at a set time and enjoy a shorter wait time. Currently the FastPass system is installed on the most popular attractions such as Soarin, and Test Track.

When you move into World Showcase you will get to visit the different countries represented here at Epcot. Guests will visit eleven pavilions for such countries as Canada, Mexico, Norway and China. Some countries feature movies or rides, while others are mostly shops and recreations of popular tourist attractions such as the Eiffel Tower. With some planning, your visit to Epcot can be one of the most enjoyable vacations you will ever have!

Disney's Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World

The Animal Kingdom has been one of the most distinct theme parks in the Disneyland World resorts. It gives everyone the opportunity not only to learn about the variety of species but how to protect and save them from their own extinction. Here are some the other reasons on why you should visit the Animal Kingdom:

The Walking tours and Safari Rides - Only a handful of zoos can give you some of the most exotic animals that you can ever find in this planet. Here at this theme park you can witness, and even be up close to touch this wonderful creatures. Of course one of the clincher attractions is having an African like safari in Orlando. You don't have to go all the way to Kenya or South Africa just to view some lions, tigers, giraffes, elephants, it's all right here in the Animal Kingdom theme park.

From crazy roller coasters to wicked rapid rides - Yes, not all in this theme park is about the animals. There are some awesome rides like Expedition Everest that would give you the roller coaster thrill that most can be seen in Hollywood Studios and The Magic Kingdom. The Kali River Rapids is about getting a feel of going white water rafting in the Colorado rapids. Definitely these two attractions are a must for thrill seekers to provide more action in your theme park visit.

For the Dinosaur Junkies - The Dino land USA area is perfect for everyone who is into dinosaurs. From replicas of actual Dinosaurs, dinosaur fossils, to even having a Jurassic Park type of an adventure, you can see how these prehistoric creatures came about and made a civilization out of it.

It's all about conservation education - Like what I have mentioned awhile ago, the Rafiki's Planet Watch area gives them the opportunity to properly educate all Animal Kingdom visitors about the environment. Through their exhibits and their hands-on sections of the area, it shows that Walt Disney had a deep affection and concern for Mother Nature.

It's all about Entertainment - Where you can find two Broadway type musicals in one theme park? Of course here in the Animal Kingdom, The Lion King and Finding Nemo shows are a must see as they give joy and fun to all visitors of different ages.

Disney's Magic Kingdom

So Much to See and Experience at Disney's Magic Kingdom

All of Walt Disney World literally sparkles with magic and whimsy, but the Disney Magic Kingdom is certainly the most special part of the Disney World complex. While many refer to the entire Disney resort as the Magic Kingdom, indeed, there is one special park that bears the name.

The Disney Magic Kingdom was the very first park to open at the Orlando, Florida resort. Modeled after the original Disneyland Park, which opened in Anaheim, California in 1955, Florida's Disney Magic Kingdom arrived in 1971 boasting new and better attractions, a larger castle, and much, much more. When the park first opened, Disney Imagineers bragged that the old Disneyland could fit in Disney World's parking lot!

The Disney Magic Kingdom is the "most Disney" of all the parks, featuring rides based on favorite Disney characters and classic Disney movies. This park, easily recognized by the grand Sleeping Beauty Castle that stands at its center, is divided into 5 sections - Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Frontierland, Liberty Square, and Adventureland. Main Street U.S.A. runs down the center of the Magic Kingdom, halting at the castle and inviting guests to choose a land to explore.

Fantasyland is a favorite with the little ones and is the part of the Disney Magic Kingdom that features such classic attractions as It's a Small World, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Cinderella's Golden Carousel and Peter Pan's Flight. Tomorrowland ushers you into the world of the future and sends you zipping through wild attractions like the amazing Space Mountain, Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, and the all-new Stitch's Great Escape.

Looking for a little adventure in the Disney Magic Kingdom? Head to Frontierland and Adventureland, where you can barrel down the falls in Splash Mountain, take a bumpy ride on the Thunder Mountain Railroad, or come face to face with buccaneers in Pirates of the Caribbean. A visit to Liberty Square presents you with the opportunity to meet America's leaders in the Hall of the Presidents and hobnob with 999 grim grinning ghosts in The Haunted Mansion.

The Disney Magic Kingdom is also home to a number of excellent restaurants, including Cinderella's Royal Table, The Liberty Tree Tavern, and the Crystal Palace. There's also plenty of food to grab on-the-run including Disney Magic Kingdom's famous gigantic turkey legs, nearly large enough for the whole family! In addition, there are plenty of places to enjoy an ice cream cone or other sweet treat.

For an extra special look at the Disney Magic Kingdom, consider signing up for one of Disney's special backstage tours, where guests learn some well-kept secrets about how this mega-park operates so smoothly. Those with children might enjoy Disney's Family Magic Tour, which includes an interactive scavenger hunt throughout the park. For visitors over the age of 16, Disney's Keys to the Kingdom Tour is an excellent choice and will provide you with stories about the history of the Park and about Walt Disney, including his visions, philosophies and incredible accomplishments.

Wet 'n Wild Water Park

Orlando's Wet 'n Wild Water Park

The sun and the heat is perhaps the biggest reason why Florida has become a preferred living and vacationing locale, but it is also true that when it really gets hot you need to cool off. One of the nicest ways to relieve the heat in Florida is to spend a day at a water park. If you are in Orlando you can do it in style at one of the world's first water parks, Wet 'n Wild.

This is an attraction that constantly ranks as one of the tourist favorites in Orlando and "Amusement Business" magazine which keeps a close watch on this industry also ranks Wet 'n Wild highly, calling it America's number one water park. The park has a number of attractions roughly falling into a few categories: thrill rides, multi-person rides, take it easy and just for kids.

For example, one of the most popular thrill rides is the Brain Wash. You have to climb walls of a six-story structure and drop 53 feet into a funnel where you are you swirl around amidst lights, sound and video before heading on to a refreshing escape. Another of the thrill rides is the Bomb Bay, where you enter a bomb-like capsule and feel the floor drop from beneath you as you take a plunge down a 76-foot high, nearly vertical slide.

Other popular rides include are Disco H2O, which is similar to the Brain Wash, Black Hole which is a pitch black twisty double rider with amazing lights, and the Surge, a big, wide open flume where you ride up the sides. These are all multi-person rides and it is a lot of fun to do it with your friends and family members.

There are also more leisurely, easy-going rides where you can just enjoy getting splashed by the water and cooling off. And there is an entire kid's park section that is just right for your kids.

A new feature for the Wet 'n Wild location in Orlando is the Sun 'n Sounds Performance program which offers musical groups an opportunity to perform at the water park. Marching bands, choirs, and other groups will be performing at the East Wave Deck of the Surf Lagoon in the coming year.

Here are a few details that are important to know about. The park is staffed by certified lifeguards. You may bring along your personal tubes, rafts and other flotation devices subject to the approval by the park. The pools are heated during the cooler weather, and of course the park has a Beach Shop where you can shop for sun care products, fashion items and souvenirs. The food that is sold in the concessions is the normal amusement park fare, hamburgers, hot dogs, BBQ, etc.

Located on International Drive, one block east of I-4 at exit 75A, Wet 'n Wild offers extended operating hours during the summer. The park is open year-round with heated pools in the cooler months
ing to in this most wondrous place.

Tarpon Springs' Florida

Tarpon Springs' Sponge Industry

Many tourists vacationing on the Florida beaches of Clearwater or St. Petersburg have made the short trip north to the small town of Tarpon Springs. The charming town is lined with Greek restaurants, bakeries, gift shops and of course, the sponge merchants. One ponders, after eating the Gyros, the sweet honey-laced baklava and the powdered sugar-coated wedding cakes, how it all started? How could this small town in Florida boast that over 70% of its residents are Greek-speaking? The answer: because of the sponge industry, this melting pot just didn't melt.

The beginning of the sponge industry in Tarpon Springs actually traces back to Key West, in the early 19th century. Many fishermen would find grass sponges washed ashore after storms. This led to the development of "hook boats" which were small boats that would row or sail a short distance off-shore. These early spongers used a log pole with a three or four prong rake at the end to hook sponges from the shallow waters.

Soon thereafter, the sponge industry boomed in the Key West area. Word of the new industry spread as far away as New York City, which by 1849 became a lively sponging market. Because there was no direct link from Key West to New York by sea or by land, the sponges were first shipped from Key West to Tampa Bay, then carried by wagon from Tampa to New York City by livery business owner Granville Noblit, Sr. Key West became the leading source of natural sponges for the Northeast. This soon changed with technology advancements that enabled men to dive for sponges. The sponge divers found larger beds filled with new and different varieties of sponges further north in the Gulf of Mexico.

In 1889, John K. Cheney, a wealthy Philadelphia banker, observed the sponge industry at Key West, and realized that the sponge variety offered in Gulf of Mexico just off of Tampa Bay was greater and more diverse. He recognized the natural advantage of locating the sponge harvesting closer to both the carriage routes and the richer sponging waters of the Gulf of Mexico. He soon built warehouses in what is now known as Tarpon Springs to try to make it the leading market. He and Ernest Meres became the first sponge merchants in Tarpon Springs, buying for New York interests.

In 1896, John Cocoris, a Greek immigrant and sponge buyer working in New York City, arrived in Tarpon Springs. He went to work for John Cheney and with Cheney's financial backing, recruited 500 sponge divers from Greece. The first diver hired was Demosthenes Kavasilas, who brought his experience from the Mediterranean Sea, as did the second diver, Stylianos Besis. The divers were amazed at the natural fortune of the Gulf of Mexico. Sponges by the thousands darkened the virgin and un-trodden sea floor. The bottom was so thick with sponges, that every 10 minutes the divers sent up baskets filled with large wool-sponges, the best and sturdiest in the world. By evening, the diving boat would be filled with sponges. They began to add more boats and men as fast as possible.

By the end of 1906, 1,500 Greek sponge divers and workers had arrived in Tarpon Springs. The sponge industry grew tremendously in the 1920's and 1930's with a fleet of about 200 ships. In 1936, Tarpon Springs was recognized as the sponge capital of the world, and more than 2,000 Greeks had moved to the area. However, in 1946, a disease (red tide) attacked the Gulf of Mexico and killed almost all of the sponges. To make matters worse, the invention of the synthetic sponge in the 1940's by the DuPont company also devastated the Florida sponge industry. By the 1960's and 1970's the sponge industry began to rebound - although the sponge divers of the Mediterranean and Aegean seas had now become the leaders of the industry. Fate had something else in store because in 1986, the Mediterranean sponges were exposed to blight disease and nearly all sponges in the Aegean sea were destroyed. Tarpon Springs was able to once again claim its title as the "Sponge Capital of the World."

Tourism has now replaced sponging as Tarpon Springs' major economic activity. Thousands of visitors come to the city each year to enjoy the outdoors, play golf or fish. While shopping for art and antiques or touring charming Victorian neighborhoods, tourists have the unique opportunity to take a break and visit the Sponge Docks to experience Greek culture right here in Tarpon Springs.

St. Petersburg, FL

St. Petersburg, FL

For aging baby boomers, the decision on where to retire is made difficult by so many beautiful North American venues. Historically, many have chosen to buy Florida property, particularly in the Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg Florida marketplace because of the warm climate, beautiful beaches, friendly people, fine health care, no personal income tax and a variety of other reasons.

Yes, the City of St. Petersburg has experienced periods of glory, disrepair and now, revitalization. In 1875, Detroit resident General John Williams purchased 2,500 acres of land on Tampa Bay. The General had visions of a grand and vibrant city with elegant parks and broad streets, which today are the trademark of St. Petersburg's cityscape.

Within a dozen years, the Russian aristocrat Peter Demens brought the Orange Belt Railway to St. Petersburg. The first train arrived on June 8, 1888. Shortly thereafter Demens named the city after his birthplace, St. Petersburg, Russia.

Florida's love affair with baseball soon brought professional baseball's spring training to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1914. Al Lang, the city's former mayor, convinced Branch Rickey to move his St. Louis Browns to the Sunshine City for spring training.

The state's first big growth boom in the 1920's resulted in an invasion of tourists arriving by auto, railroad, and yacht. The Gandy Bridge opened in 1924, reducing travel time to Tampa by more than half and positioning St. Petersburg to become Pinellas County's largest city. The 1920s also brought beautiful architecture to downtown St. Petersburg and adjoining neighborhoods. The city's architecture reflected a Mediterranean Revival motif. Snell Isle, a 275 acre subdivision was the result of Perry Snell's love of the Tampa Bay area. Snell Isle owes its existence to Snell first visiting St. Petersburg on his wedding trip in 1898. Upon returning the following year, his first purchase was the waterfront property located at First Street and Fourth Avenue North, now known as North Shore Park.

St. Petersburg's makeover is evident in several Mediterranean Revival buildings including The Vinoy Hotel, the Princess Martha, the Snell Arcade, and the Jungle Country Club Hotel. Others can be seen in the Spanish castles and homes along Coffee Pot Bayou and in the Jungle Prada neighborhood.

St. Petersburg continued to have strong tourist years through the 20s. Like many other areas of the state, the real estate boom crashed during The Great Depression. But, St. Petersburg recovered, with the help of large Public Works Administration projects in the 1930s, bringing $10 million in new investment. St. Petersburg's City Hall was built with New Deal federal funds in 1939.

The city experienced phenomenal growth throughout the 1940s. St. Pete was home to the U.S. Coast Guard Station on Bayboro Harbor as a training base for World War II troops. Anti-submarine air patrols were made over the Gulf of Mexico during WWII. The War Department later selected St. Petersburg as a major training center for the Army Air Corps. More than 100,000 pilots and trainees occupied every hotel in the city. As a result, the population grew fast and created a housing shortage with families of military men looking for a place to live. Post war, many of the soldiers stationed in the Tampa Bay area returned to live with their families or to visit as tourists until their retirement.

The 1950s and 60s were notable for the wide spread use of air conditioning, which resulted in a considerable amount of housing for retirees. Mirroring national trends, the Central Plaza and Tyrone Gardens shopping centers attracted local businesses to relocate from the downtown area. The population grew beyond 200,000. As the automobile became the prime mode of transport, streetcar tracks were removed to make way for better roads. The 1960s experienced building of the municipal marina, the main library, the Bayfront Center and the Museum of Fine Arts.

St. Petersburg's quest for a Major League Baseball franchise began in the 1970s. It was not until 20 years later that the arrival of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1998 saw the team move their permanent home to downtown's Tropicana Field.

Today, the downtown core is experiencing a period revitalization with municipal projects that include retail shops, restaurants, and movie theaters. More than 900 community events bring millions of people each year to experience yacht races, triathlons, baseball, basketball, cycling, cultural exhibits, motor racing and music. Seven museums in the downtown district attract tourists. A state university, 10 marine institutes and more than two dozen galleries attest to the city's commitment to education and health care. Much movement into the historic neighborhoods continues as residents invest in their communities with a great source of pride.

Clearwater Beach, Tampa Bay Area

Day #1 Clearwater Beach, Florida

Despite being overdeveloped and lined with beach front cookie-cutter hotels, Clearwater Beach draws visitors because of incredible white-sand beaches, a large fishing fleet , and it's proximity to Tampa and St Petersburg. It's also a prime area for kayaking, shelling, bicycling and sunning yourself on the beach - which just about sums up the local 'tourist attractions.' Unless you count beach volleyball on Clearwater Beach, which is pretty darn good, too.

This northernmost barrier island is about 22 miles north of St Pete Beach and 2 miles west of downtown Clearwater (a separate city on the mainland) over the Memorial Causeway (Hwy 60). From here the road south is S Gulfview Blvd and north is Mandalay Ave, Clearwater's main drag. Pier 60 is right at the roundabout where these three roads meet. From St Petersburg, it's about a 1/2 an hour drive or a 1 1/2 hour bus ride. Although crowded, the scale of the island is humane (only 3.5 miles long) and it's easy to get around.

- Pinellas Trail

This 47-mile paved bicycle trail, built on the abandoned CSX railway bed, runs from St Petersburg to Tarpon Springs. To date, it's the longest urban trail in the country. It's also very smooth - smooth enough for inline skates or roller skates as well as bicycles. There are lots of stops along the way, with cafes, pubs, bike shops, skate shops and fast-food places. As it's on the route of the old railway, the corridor cuts through widely carnied terrain: sometimes you're in the middle of downtown, sometimes along waterways, sometimes among orange groves and sometimes you're riding practically through people's backyards.

From the Clearwater Beach International Youth Hotel, which rents bikes, head over the causeway, and ride north on fort Harrison Ave and east on Jones St for about three blocks. You'll pick up the southern end of the Clearwater to Tarpon Springs section of the path. It's 13.2 miles from Jones St to Tarpon Ave.

Contact the Pinellas County Planning Department (727-464-4751; 600 Cleveland St, Pinellas; 8am-5pm Mon-Fri) for their free guidebook listing rest stops and local attractions; it also has a mileage chart.

Florida Timeshares - Five Reasons to Buy One

Buying Florida Timeshares

If you're thinking about spending your money on a timeshare, Florida is one of the US states that attracts most of the timeshare owners. There are many reasons why. Florida is well known for its great weather year around, sunny beaches, attractions such as alligator lakes and famous Daytona car racing. And, of course, we're talking about Disney World, Universal Studio, Epcot Center, Magic Kingdom, and other theme parks. If you're still not really convinced you need to own a time share in Florida, here are the five reasons why you really should.

Reason 1: Popular Vacation Spot

The main reason to purchase a timeshare in Florida is because it is such a popular vacation spot. We're not talking only about Orlando. Areas such as Miami and Daytona Beach are well known places even worldwide with many tourists visiting every year.

Reason 2: Large Availability of Timeshares

Florida timeshares are actually ones of the most popular timeshares in the world. Florida was the first state out of all continental United States in the timeshare industry in 1970s (after Hawaii in 1969), and it stays at the top of the list of the total number of timeshares available and sold in the state.

Reason 3: Many Places to Explore

Even after spending 4 days in Orlando, you can come back again and again to different parts of Florida and explore many new areas of interest. Come back to experience car racing of Daytona Beach, sunbath on the Miami Beach or on one of the Sarasota beaches, or enjoy the art of Salvador Dali at the Dali museum in St. Petersburg. Timeshares will allow you to visit Florida again and again, with less hassle.

Reason 4: Timeshares Offer Much More

Timeshares generally offer much more than your average hotel room. Many of Florida timeshares have luxury amenities; some have large apartment style rooms, with a kitchen, a bedroom and a living room; some have spas and saunas and other resort amenities. Some Florida timeshares come with swimming pools, are pet friendly, and some even have babysitting service. When visiting Florida next time, you don't have to rent two hotel rooms - you should all be able to fit into your Florida timeshare unit.

Reason 5: Make Money

When you own a timeshare, you own an asset. Just like your house, or your car, a time share is an asset that you own and can use. You can easily make money by simply renting out Florida timeshares to your family and friends. You'll make some money for yourself and your friends will save their money as well. You can also sell your timeshare if you decide to do so in the future.

Now, this will only make sense if you don't overpay for your Florida time share when you purchase it. Like with any timeshare, depending where you get your Florida timeshare, you could get a good deal or not. You can often find great deals on Florida timeshares for sale on the Internet. Make sure you carefully read all the details about these deals. You don't want to buy a deed for a Florida time share only to find out later there is a huge maintenance fee that you have to pay every year. Read all the details for the deals you find, no matter where you find them, and if you see something you like, go for it as it will not sit there forever!
fulfill your dream of vacationing to in this most wondrous place.
